KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Khurrum Sherzaman has lambasted the Sindh Government and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) management for not taking action against the hydrant mafia.
The corruption of hydrant mafia is costing the public in terms of lower water availability and KWSB in monetary terms of lost revenues in the hundreds of millions of rupees on a monthly basis.
Sherzaman expressed outrage that the hydrant mafia is selling water on a monthly basis worth hundreds of millions of rupees for billions while the KWSB is only receiving peanuts in monthly official revenue from the mafia.
Furthermore, water tankers are supposed to be supplying hydrant water to poor areas of the city but instead are selling water at exorbitant rates to VIP areas.
Due to a combination of running water from hydrants and the heavy tankers, many roads throughout Karachi are in dilapidated state.
The PS-112 MPA believes that it the collective failure of the Sindh Government and KWSB management that is allowing the hydrant mafia to operate with impunity.
This ongoing corruption of the hydrant mafia must end but sadly, the Sindh Government is ignoring it.
Sherzaman demands that the Chief Minister Sindh take immediate notice and hold his Local Government Minister to account as he also serves as Chairman of KWSB.
